Overview

The Drum Coordinator supports the organization, communication, and coordination of drum groups for the Two Cultures One Community Powwow. This position helps ensure drums are scheduled, informed, and treated respectfully while maintaining the flow, integrity, protocol, and committee expectations of the event.

The Drum Coordinator works closely with the Two Cultures One Community Powwow Committee, Arena Director, MC, Drum Judge, and Head Staff to support a respectful and well-organized powwow experience.

This is a Committee Official position and is not considered Head Staff.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the invited and host drum groups prior to the event.

  • Confirm attendance, contact information, and drum group details.

  • Assist in organizing drum rotation, placement, and schedules.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for drum groups during the Two Cultures One Community Powwow.

  • Communicate schedules, expectations, updates, and committee decisions clearly and respectfully.

  • Help ensure respect, drum protocol, event rules, and committee expectations are upheld throughout the event.

  • Support and reinforce committee decisions fairly and consistently while maintaining respectful relationships with host drums, visiting drums, Head Staff, and committee members.

  • Address concerns involving drum groups in a respectful and professional manner while supporting the Two Cultures One Community Powwow Committee, Arena Director, MC, Drum Judge, and other event leadership.

  • Work collaboratively with the Drum Judge regarding drum group coordination and communication.

  • Attend planning meetings leading up to the Two Cultures One Community Powwow.

  • Remain responsive to emails, calls, and coordination needs prior to, during, and after the event.

  • Be available on-site before, during, and after the Two Cultures One Community Powwow each day, including extended event hours as needed.
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with powwow structure and drum protocol.

  • Strong communication and organization skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple groups and moving parts.

  • Dependable and responsive leading up to and during the event.

  • Prior powwow or event coordination experience. (preferred, not required)
     

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and move throughout the event grounds for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift and move light equipment, chairs, or supplies as needed.
     

Time Commitment

  • Participation in planning meetings prior to the Two Cultures One Community Powwow.

    • Monthly meetings initially.

    • Meetings increase to twice monthly and then weekly as the Two Cultures One Community Powwow approaches.

  • Ongoing pre-event communication and coordination with drum groups.

  • Availability during the Two Cultures One Community Powwow weekend, including extended on-site hours before, during, and after daily activities.

  • Prompt responsiveness to emails, phone calls, and coordination needs leading up to the event.
     

Compensation

  • An honorarium will be provided for this position.
